NGC7293

" Helix" nebula

Object  Details: The helix is an example of a  "planetary" nebula but has nothing to do with the formation of planets .  Planetaries get their name because their glowing gas cloud looks like the disk of a planet when viewed through a small telescope. A planetary nebula is created when an "aging" star's outer layers of material escape into space. Located  in the constellation Aquarius, the helix is approximately 650 light years from earth!
